Digital Citizenship Short Course ~ Syllabus

Course Overview

This blended short course is an asynchronous, online unit that will be incorporated into your regular technology course. Due to the blogging and discussion board components, among other things, you will be bound to a specific timeline for the completion of the course.  It is expected that you will join in regular face-to-face or synchronous sessions with the teacher and other students.  Specific time limits for each activity are not provided, but you are expected to keep up with the pace set by your classmates and teacher.  Using formative assessment results and general feedback from students during synchronous sessions, the teacher will determine how much time to allow for the various modules.

The reason for creating an asynchronous, online short course on digital citizenship within a regular course is to allow you to work independently while still having access to your teacher and classmates at regular intervals.  Throughout this course, you will practice being positive participants in the online world.  You will be engaged through a variety of educational technology tools and you will have many opportunities to connect and collaborate with other students as you complete the nine modules for the course.

Tools and Expectations

Blog

Throughout the course you will be expected to maintain a blog. We recommend using the Wordpress platform but you may use other blogs that you may find to be more user friendly. There are a variety of reasons we have selected to use blogs. Blogs are a great way for you to showcase what you are learning and reflect on what you have learned. It's a place for you to share your thoughts on what you have been learning and ask others to share their thoughts. By integrating questions into your blogs and reflecting on material you will open the door for collaboration and communication with other classmates through the comment section. Your blog will be public which also takes your learning beyond the course and extends to others outside of the course. Expectations are as follows:

  • ongoing blog with at least one post per week on an assigned topic or prompt
  • additional posts will come in the form of an actual assignment
  • you should be reading and commenting on 2-3 classmate blogs per week

Twitter

This will serve as a place to make connections, share resources and find information. It is intended for you to created a network of people with similar interests in which you can learn from and share with. As with blogs, Twitter allows you to connect with people within the course but more importantly with people from around the globe. To help you make these connections you will use hashtags and a feed reader such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to follow people and hashtags related to the course. Expectations are as follows:

  • Share new resources and articles on a weekly basis to the hashtag #digcitSK
  • Retweet, quote tweets and reply to tweets
  • Follow users who have similar interests to build your network

Discussion Forum (through Canvas)

The discussion forum will be used primarily for you to ask questions and communicate with others in the class. From time to time you may receive an assignment that involves using the discussion forum to answer a question or discuss an article. This forum will be closed from the public and will only involve those who are taking this course. Please ensure that your name proper name is used in your profile so that we know who is answering or asking questions. It is also helpful for you to read the replies that have been giving before you answer so you can understand the whole conversation and add to it accordingly.
